To Be Thankful.

When we say we are thankful for friends, family, food and the blessing in our lives, to whom are we thankful.  Certainly, none of these things just happen randomly.  If they were random, why would we ever bother to give thanks.  To give thanks implies that there is someone who is responsible for what has happened.  We are recognizing that we ourselves have not done the action ourselves, and are therefore thankful to whomever is responsible.

Like many holidays, our culture has taken this tradition and fashioned it into its own persona.  The turkey and favorite foods, parades and family gatherings, everyone has their own understanding of Thanksgiving.  From its roots till today, many in our country have forgotten this holidays origin.

Tradition, is the remembering of those individuals that had come before us.  It was their actions and teachings that helped build the foundation in which we understand the world around us.  So as we gather around the Thanksgiving Day feast, let us remember what those first Pilgrims were giving thanks for. Their thankfulness was for the blessings of a good harvest and their survival in a new and unfamiliar land.  Their thankfulness was for the family and friends, that together they were able to survive another year to be sure.

So, who were they giving thanks to?  That's right, God.  The first thanksgiving was about giving thanks to God.  The Pilgrims knew that they owed all of their success to God.  Remember this thanksgiving to send those thanks to the people who have helped you in your life, most importantly and centrally, God.  Without Him, there would be no blessings to give thanks for.

Blessings for you Thanksgiving time in the name of Jesus,
Pastor Jeremy
